My son suddenly disappeared from my life one day, leaving me to care for his daughter. He had been married to a wonderful woman, who died unexpectedly when their daughter was only nine years old. Even more shocking to me was that, a few weeks later, my son fell head over heels in love with another woman. Within six months, they were married. After marrying, it was as if my son had completely changed. He neglected his daughter and became obsessed with his new wife. One day, he asked me to look after his daughter while he and his wife went on a three-week vacation. I agreed, but he did not return as planned, did not respond to my messages, and soon I discovered that he had sold his house. Then, he vanished. For a decade, my son showed no interest in his daughter or me. After many years, my son decided to return to our home, not knowing that he would find it abandoned and empty.šŸ˜³šŸ‘‡ See less

Woman Raises Sonā€™s Daughter He Left 10 Years Ago, He Returns and Finds House Abandoned and Empty ā€“ Story of the Day

A man abandoned his young daughter with his mother to go off with his new wife, and when he comes back ten years later, he is shocked to find they both vanished without a trace.

Doris Dakkar had been a single mother to her only son after her husband had walked out on her when Nicholas was seven years old. It hadnā€™t been easy, but Doris worked two jobs and made sure her son lacked for nothing.

Back then, sheā€™d been thirty years old. She never imagined sheā€™d become a single parent once again at the age of sixty. Nor did she imagine her son would abandon his daughter. She never thought he had that much of his father in him.

Nicholas had married a lovely girl, Sandra, but unfortunately, she passed away when their daughter, Paige, was nine. Doris had told herself that Nicky had been lonely, thatā€™s why heā€™d taken up with Donna just weeks after Sandraā€™s death ā€” and married her within six months.

Doris had been concerned to see little Paige, who had once been a happy, boisterous child, become quieter and quieter, but she attributed it to the loss of her mother. She still believed her son was a good man, but not for long.

Selfish people care nothing for othersā€™ happiness.

The summer Paige turned ten, Nicholas came around and asked Doris if he could take care of Paige for three weeks while he and Donna went on a vacation to Alaska on their own.

ā€œAll couples need time alone, Mom,ā€ Nicholas had said. ā€œAnd Paige has become difficult of lateā€¦ She resents Donna.ā€

Doris was surprised but agreed. ā€œOK Nicky,ā€ she said. ā€œI think a break might be good for all three of you. But if you permit meā€¦I think Donna knew what she was getting into. She knew you had a daughter. A grown woman should be able to deal with the pain of a ten-year-old still trying to come to terms with her motherā€™s death and her fatherā€™s swift remarriage.ā€

Nicholas flushed scarlet and puffed up his lips in a gesture Doris knew well. ā€œI should have known youā€™d take Paigeā€™s side!ā€ he cried. ā€œDonna loves me, she makes me happy, and thatā€™s all that matters to me.ā€

ā€œI would have thought SOMEONE had to be on Paigeā€™s side and Iā€™m surprised itā€™s not her father,ā€ Doris replied, stung. ā€œAnd making your daughter happy should make YOU happy too!ā€

Nicholas walked out in a huff, but when he came back a week later with Paige and her suitcase, he seemed his happy normal self. He kissed Paige goodbye affectionately and gave Doris a hug.

ā€œIā€™ll be back on August 27, Mom,ā€ he said and drove off with a cheery wave.

Doris and Paige wouldnā€™t see him again for over a decade. August 27th came and went and Nicholas didnā€™t show up. Doris phoned her son but was stunned to discover his number had been disconnected.

Nicholas hadnā€™t called his daughter since heā€™d left, but he had occasionally replied to her text messages. Now it seemed he was gone. Doris discovered that the house Nicholas and Sandra had bought had been sold. He was gone.

Heā€™d abandoned his daughter with his aging mother without a word, or any concern for her well-being.

Doris sat down with Paige and told her: ā€œListen, we will manage, you and I. I donā€™t want you to worry. Iā€™ll take care of you. I love you Paige, and I know that your father will come to regret what he has done.ā€

Doris didnā€™t know how right she was. Ten years later, Nicholas drove up to his motherā€™s house. The house was there, but it looked abandoned and decrepit. The garden was overgrown, and the windows were shuttered.

Nicholas knocked on his motherā€™s neighborā€™s door. The woman was surprised to see him and was reluctant to give him his daughterā€™s forwarding address. She eyed his shabby clothes and glanced at his rusty old car.

ā€œPaige married and Doris lives with her. I hope you donā€™t expect the welcome that was given to the Prodigal Son,ā€ she said coldly (she was her grandmotherā€™s best friend). ā€œAfter what you did to them, Iā€™d expect the worse if I were you.ā€

Nicholas didnā€™t even reply. He just turned his back and walked away. He wasnā€™t worried, he knew how to handle his motherā€¦

When he arrived at the address, he was stunned. His daughter and his mother were apparently living in a huge luxurious mansion!

He walked up to the door and rang the bell. ā€œI want to speak to Doris or Paige Dakkar, please,ā€ he told the uniformed maid who opened the door.

ā€œYou mean Mrs, Dakkar of Mrs. Henderson, sir.ā€ the maid corrected him with a disdainful smile, and she led him into a huge elegant sitting room.

A few minutes later, Paige walked in. She stared at him in silence, but without any trace of surprise, and Nicholas knew that the meddling neighbor had called to warn them that he was coming.

ā€œPaige, my babyā€¦ā€ he said and stepped forward to embrace the lovely woman his daughter had become.

ā€œWhat is it that you want, father,ā€ she asked without a trace of anger in her voice.

ā€œI wanted to see you, and grandma Doris, honey,ā€ Nicholas said with his best smile. ā€œIā€™ve missed you so muchā€¦ā€

At that moment, Doris walked in. She too looked calm ā€” and a lot younger than her years. ā€œNicholas,ā€ she said. ā€œWhat do you want?ā€

Nicholas flushed. ā€œI wanted to see my family,ā€ he cried. ā€œI was hoping for a warm welcome!ā€

ā€œYou abandoned me, father,ā€ Paige said coldly. ā€œYou expected warmth?ā€

ā€œMom?ā€ whined Nicholas. ā€œIt wasnā€™t meā€¦ Donnaā€¦she insisted. She said sheā€™d leave meā€¦ā€

ā€œOh!ā€ cried Doris with a knowing smile. ā€œBut youā€™re here alone. Does that mean that the money ran out and so did Donna?ā€

Nicholas looked around the beautiful room with envy. ā€œYouā€™re certainly not short!ā€ he said bitterly. ā€œI would have thought you could spare somethingā€¦Iā€™m unemployed and strugglingā€¦ā€

ā€œIā€™m surprised you have the gall to ask us for anything, father,ā€ Paige said. ā€œYou left us when we needed you most, but we managed. Now thanks to my husband, we have everything we need.ā€

ā€œIā€™m still your father,ā€ Nicholas said indignantly.

ā€œYouā€™re nothing to me,ā€ she said, but she reached for her grandmotherā€™s hand. Doris was looking at Nicholas with tears and sadness in her eyes. ā€œBut for grandma Dorisā€™ sake, Iā€™ll help you.ā€

Paige walked over to a delicate Louis XV desk and unlocked the drawer. She fished out a set of house keys and placed some money in an envelope. ā€œThese are the keys to the old house.

ā€œThereā€™s $5,000 in the envelope. Donā€™t think youā€™ll get a cent more, so donā€™t bother coming back.ā€

Paige put her arm around Grandma Dorisā€™s shoulders and led her out of the room. Within seconds, the maid was there to escort Nicholas out before he had the chance to pocket any of the obviously valuable knick-knacks.

Nicholas sat in his car for a long time staring at his daughterā€™s sprawling estate. ā€œI did what I had to do,ā€ he whined. ā€œWhy canā€™t people understand how Iā€™ve suffered? Thereā€™s no gratitude in this worldā€¦ā€

What can we learn from this story?ā€

  • Selfish people care nothing for othersā€™ happiness, only for their own.Ā Nicholas didnā€™t think twice about abandoning his family as long as he had what he wanted.
  • What you give is what you get.Ā Nicholas was expecting to share in his daughterā€™s prosperity and he got quite a surprise ā€” but thanks to Paige and Dorisā€™ innate kindness, he got more than he deserved ā€” a roof over his head.
